How to Get to Nessebar

Nessebar sits on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, about 35km east of Burgas. It is well-connected by public transport in summer, and reachable by road from most major cities in a few hours. This guide covers the main arrival routes and the practical details for each.

From Burgas

Burgas is the main regional hub: it has an international airport, a train station, and bus connections across Bulgaria. Getting from Burgas to Nessebar is straightforward.

By bus: Buses run regularly from Burgas bus station (Yug Terminal) to Nessebar throughout the day. Journey time is 35–45 minutes depending on traffic. Fare is approximately 3–5 BGN. In summer, services run roughly every 30 minutes from early morning until late evening.

By taxi: From Burgas city center, expect 35–50 BGN for the 25–30 minute ride. From Burgas Airport, a direct taxi to Nessebar costs approximately 40–60 BGN. This is a flat-rate negotiation; agree on the price before getting in.

By transfer: Several transfer services operate fixed-price airport-to-resort routes. These are typically cheaper than a taxi when travelling with luggage, and they can be booked in advance.

Visiting without a car

From Sunny Beach

Nessebar and Sunny Beach are 3km apart, and the connection between them is one of the most frequent on the coast.

By bus: Route 1 runs between Sunny Beach and Nessebar throughout the day and evening in summer. Fare is 2–3 BGN. Journey time is around 10 minutes.

By taxi: A taxi between the two is 10–20 BGN depending on the exact pickup point.

On foot: The coast road between Sunny Beach and Nessebar is walkable (around 35–40 minutes) but runs alongside traffic for most of the route. Not recommended as a standard option.

From Sofia

Sofia is 420km from Nessebar. The journey takes 4 to 5 hours by road.

By bus: Direct buses between Sofia and Nessebar operate in summer, typically departing from Sofia Central Bus Station. Some services go via Burgas with a change; others are direct. Journey time is 5–6 hours. Fares are around 25–35 BGN.

By car: The route via the A1 motorway to Burgas and then the E87 coastal road is the fastest. Allow 4 to 4.5 hours from Sofia under normal traffic conditions.

From Varna

Varna is 100km north of Nessebar along the coast road.

By bus: Direct connections run via the coastal highway. Journey time is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. Change at Burgas or Sunny Beach may be required depending on the service.

By car: The coastal road via Obzor and Sunny Beach is the scenic route. The inland road via the A2 to Burgas is faster. Allow 1.5 hours in normal conditions.

By Car: Parking and Access

Nessebar is just off the E87 coastal highway. The main access road leads to a parking area near the causeway entrance. In July and August, this fills quickly on summer mornings. Arriving before 09:00 or after 17:00 avoids most of the parking pressure.

No vehicles are permitted inside the old town peninsula. From the parking area, the causeway walk to the main gate takes about five minutes on foot.

There is also parking available in the new town, a few minutes’ walk from the causeway. This is less pressured than the causeway-side lots and usually has space even in peak summer.

Arriving in Nessebar: What to Do First

  1. Alight or park at the causeway end — buses stop on the main road near the causeway; parking is along the same stretch.
  2. Walk the causeway on foot — 5 minutes, flat. The best full view of the fortification walls is from the water on this approach.
  3. Enter through the main gate — the old town begins here. The windmill is to your left as you arrive.
  4. Orient before committing to a route — the main tourist street runs straight ahead; the more interesting parts of the town branch off it.
