Traveling to Nessebar Without a Car

Nessebar is one of the more car-free-friendly towns on the Bulgarian coast, for a simple reason: the old town itself is pedestrianised. Nothing inside the peninsula requires a vehicle. The main question is how to get there in the first place, and the answer is easier than many visitors expect.

The Best Approach: Bus from Burgas

For most visitors arriving by air, the route into Nessebar without a car starts at Burgas. Burgas Airport serves international flights throughout summer, and from the airport or city centre, regular buses run to Nessebar throughout the day.

From Burgas Yug (South) Bus Station, buses depart for Nessebar approximately every 30 minutes in summer. The journey takes 35–45 minutes and costs 3–5 BGN per person. Tickets are available at the station or paid to the driver on board.

A taxi from Burgas to Nessebar is an alternative if travelling with luggage or arriving late. The fare is 35–50 BGN from the city, 40–60 BGN from the airport. It’s faster than the bus and more practical with bags.

From Sunny Beach

Visitors staying in Sunny Beach have the most convenient connection to Nessebar. Bus route 1 runs between the two resorts throughout the day and into the evening in summer, with a frequency of roughly every 15–20 minutes at peak times. The fare is 2–3 BGN and the journey takes around 10 minutes.

This makes Sunny Beach a workable base for a Nessebar day trip without a car. Arrive early, spend the day, return in the evening.

From Sofia by Bus

Direct bus services between Sofia and Nessebar operate in summer from Sofia Central Bus Station. Some are direct; others require a change at Burgas. Journey time is 5–6 hours. Tickets are available at the station or from online booking platforms. Prices are typically 25–35 BGN.

For longer journeys from other Bulgarian cities, Burgas is usually the most practical connection point. Trains run to Burgas from Sofia and Plovdiv, and bus connections to Nessebar depart from the Burgas station area.

Getting Around Once You’re There

The old town is entirely on foot. The causeway between the mainland and the peninsula is a five-minute walk from the main road bus stop. Inside the old town, the distances are short and there is no public transport because there is no need for it.

The main sites, the sea wall, the ruins, and the restaurants are all within a ten-minute walk of the main gate. The southern tip of the peninsula is the furthest point from the entrance, and it takes under fifteen minutes to reach on foot.

Day Trip vs Overnight Without a Car

A day trip without a car is entirely practical. The bus from Sunny Beach or Burgas takes under an hour each way, the old town is small and walkable, and the evening return bus to Sunny Beach runs until late in summer.

Staying overnight without a car is also fine. Several guesthouses in the old town and hotels in the new town are walkable from the causeway bus stop. Luggage is the main consideration: wheeled bags on cobblestones are manageable but slow.

The one inconvenience of no car in Nessebar is day trips. Sozopol, Burgas, and other nearby towns are reachable by bus, but the connections require some planning. Renting a car for a day specifically for day trips is one option; otherwise, the Burgas bus is the most versatile link.

Practical Notes

  • Bus schedules reduce significantly outside of summer. Check timetables in May, early June, and September before relying on frequency.
  • The last buses from Nessebar back to Sunny Beach and Burgas typically run until 21:00–22:00 in summer. Confirm the last departure if planning an evening visit.
  • Taxis are always available near the causeway entrance and can be flagged or arranged through accommodation.
  • There is no tram, metro, or cycle hire in Nessebar. Everything is on foot or by bus and taxi.
